Steichen, Edward "Anita Chan"
"I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself."
Edward Steichen
Steichen's photographs are very theatrical. The accent is not on the subject, but more on the interaction of the subject with very graphical surroundings. Shadows are often projected on the background, making the viewer aware of the work of the photographer, of the form of the picture more than the personality of the subject.
